Why Your Air Conditioner Runs Constantly in Florida: What I Have Seen Working in Central Florida

One of the most common concerns I hear from homeowners in Central Florida is:
“Why is my air conditioner running all day?”
After more than 17 years working in HVAC—and now servicing homes and businesses in the Orlando area—I have learned that an air conditioner running for long periods does not always mean the system is broken.
Florida is different from many other parts of the country. Our air conditioners do not only have to remove heat. They also have to remove a tremendous amount of humidity.
During a hot and humid afternoon, a properly operating AC system may run for a long time. However, when the system runs constantly and the house still feels warm, humid, or uncomfortable, there is usually a reason.
Based on what I have seen working in Central Florida, these are some of the most common reasons an air conditioner runs constantly.
1. The Air Filter Is Restricting Airflow

The first thing I check is often the simplest: the air filter.
I have visited properties where the homeowner believed the system needed refrigerant or a major repair, but the main problem was a heavily restricted filter.
An air conditioner needs to move a specific amount of air across the indoor coil. When the filter becomes dirty, the blower has difficulty pulling enough air through the system.
This can cause:
Longer cooling cycles
Weak airflow from the vents
Higher electricity usage
Poor humidity removal
Ice forming on the indoor coil
Additional stress on the blower motor
Homeowners should check their filters regularly, especially during the summer when the system is operating for many hours each day.
The filter should also be the correct size and type. A more expensive or higher-rated filter is not always better. Some filters are too restrictive for the return opening or blower system where they are installed.
2. The Outdoor Coil Is Dirty

Another common problem I see is a dirty condenser coil.
The outdoor unit releases the heat that was removed from inside the building. When the coil is covered with dirt, grass clippings, lint, leaves, or other debris, the system cannot release that heat efficiently.
The air conditioner may continue operating, but it has to work harder and longer to produce the same amount of cooling.
This can lead to:
Higher operating pressures
Increased electrical consumption
Reduced cooling capacity
Longer system runtime
Greater stress on the compressor
Premature equipment failure
Keeping the area around the outdoor unit clear is something most property owners can safely do. However, deep coil cleaning should be completed carefully. High-pressure water, harsh chemicals, or improper cleaning methods can damage the thin aluminum fins.
3. The Thermostat Fan Is Set to “ON”
This is a simple setting that can create comfort and humidity problems in Florida.
When the thermostat fan is set to ON, the indoor blower continues running even after the outdoor unit shuts off.
After a cooling cycle, moisture remains on the indoor evaporator coil. If the blower continues operating, some of that moisture can evaporate back into the home instead of draining away.
The house may reach the desired temperature but still feel humid or uncomfortable.
For most Florida homes, I recommend setting the thermostat fan to:
AUTO
This allows the blower to operate when the air conditioner is actively cooling and shut off when the cooling cycle ends.
There are exceptions for certain systems or applications, but AUTO is generally the better setting for humidity control.
4. The Return-Air Opening Is Too Small
Since working in Central Florida, I have seen several systems where the return-air opening or filter grille was too small for the amount of airflow the equipment required.
This is an important problem because replacing the air conditioner does not automatically correct an undersized return system.
When the return opening is too small, the blower has difficulty pulling enough air into the equipment. The system may become noisy, airflow from the vents may feel weak, and the air conditioner may operate longer than necessary.
An undersized return can also contribute to:
High static pressure
Blower motor stress
Reduced system capacity
Uneven room temperatures
Coil freezing
Excessive filter restriction
Higher energy usage
Proper return-air sizing should be based on the system capacity, blower performance, duct design, filter type, and available opening—not simply on the size of the old grille.
5. The Ductwork Is Leaking Into the Attic
Florida attics become extremely hot during the summer.
When supply ductwork leaks, some of the cold air you are paying to produce escapes into the attic instead of reaching the rooms.
When return ductwork leaks, the system may pull hot and humid attic air into the equipment.
I have seen duct problems that made the air conditioner appear undersized even though the equipment itself was operating.
Common signs of duct leakage include:
Certain rooms staying warmer than others
Weak airflow from specific vents
High indoor humidity
Dust entering the home
Unusually high electricity bills
Long cooling cycles
Temperature differences between rooms
Ductwork should be inspected for disconnected sections, damaged insulation, crushed flex duct, poor sealing, and improper sizing.
6. The Indoor Coil or Blower Is Dirty
Even with regular filter changes, dirt can eventually accumulate on the evaporator coil, blower wheel, and other internal components.
A dirty blower wheel may still spin, but it may not move the amount of air the system was designed to deliver.
A dirty evaporator coil can also restrict airflow and reduce heat transfer.
In the field, I sometimes find a system that appears to be operating normally from the outside. The compressor is running, the fan is turning, and cold air is coming from the vents. However, once airflow and temperature measurements are taken, it becomes clear that the system is not delivering its full capacity.
Cleaning these components can improve airflow, cooling performance, humidity removal, and system efficiency.
7. The Refrigerant Charge Is Incorrect
Many people assume that an air conditioner running constantly automatically needs refrigerant.
That is not always true.
Refrigerant should not be added based only on runtime or one pressure reading. The technician should evaluate the full system, including:
Indoor and outdoor temperatures
Airflow
Supply and return-air temperatures
Superheat
Subcooling
Equipment specifications
Coil condition
Blower performance
If the system is low on refrigerant, there may be a leak. Refrigerant does not normally disappear or become “used up” during regular operation.
Adding refrigerant without understanding why the system is low may temporarily improve performance, but it does not correct the underlying problem.
An overcharged system can also operate poorly and place additional stress on the compressor.
8. The System Is the Wrong Size
Bigger is not always better when it comes to air conditioning.
An undersized system may run constantly because it does not have enough capacity to handle the heat entering the building.
However, an oversized system can create a different problem. It may cool the air too quickly, shut off, and fail to operate long enough to remove sufficient humidity.
The result may be a cold but uncomfortable home.
The correct system size depends on more than square footage. A proper evaluation should consider:
Internal heat from appliances and equipment
Replacing a system with the same size that was previously installed does not guarantee that the original system was sized correctly.
9. Heat Is Entering the Property Faster Than Expected
Sometimes the air conditioner is not the main problem.
The system may be working correctly, but the building is gaining too much heat.
Common causes include:
Poor attic insulation
Leaking windows and doors
Large windows exposed to direct sunlight
Damaged weatherstripping
Open exterior doors
Hot attic air entering through ceiling penetrations
Uninsulated or poorly insulated ductwork
This is especially important for businesses. Restaurants, offices, retail stores, salons, and other commercial properties may have additional heat from lighting, computers, cooking equipment, customers, employees, and doors opening throughout the day.
Before recommending larger equipment, the entire building should be considered.
10. The Air Conditioner Is Aging or Losing Capacity
As air-conditioning equipment ages, components begin to wear.
A system may continue operating without completely failing, but its cooling capacity may gradually decrease.
Problems may include:
A weakening compressor
Worn blower motor
Dirty or deteriorated coils
Damaged condenser fins
Failing capacitors
Electrical resistance at contactors or connections
Incorrect motor speeds
Deteriorated ductwork
This is why preventive maintenance should involve more than replacing the filter and looking at the thermostat.
The technician should evaluate the overall condition and performance of the equipment so developing problems can be identified before they become emergency repairs.
When Constant AC Operation May Be Normal
On a very hot Florida afternoon, the air conditioner may run almost continuously and still be operating correctly.
I am generally less concerned when:
The system maintains the thermostat setting
The airflow feels strong
The indoor temperature remains consistent
The humidity is reasonably controlled
There is no ice or leaking water
There are no unusual sounds or odors
The electrical breaker is not tripping
A system running constantly while maintaining 75°F is very different from a system running constantly while the indoor temperature continues rising to 80°F.
The second situation needs to be evaluated.
Safe Things to Check Before Calling an HVAC Company
Before scheduling service, there are a few safe checks homeowners and business owners can perform.
Check the filter
Replace the filter if it is visibly dirty. Make sure it is the correct size and installed in the correct direction.
Check the thermostat
Confirm that the thermostat is set to COOL and the fan is set to AUTO.
Check the vents
Make sure supply vents and return grilles are not blocked by furniture, boxes, curtains, rugs, or merchandise.
Check exterior doors and windows
Make sure doors and windows are closed and that damaged weatherstripping is not allowing hot, humid air to enter.
Look at the outdoor unit
Check for leaves, vegetation, plastic bags, grass clippings, or other debris around the condenser.
Do not remove electrical panels or reach through the fan guard.
Check for ice or water
Ice on the refrigerant piping or water around the indoor unit may indicate an airflow, drainage, or refrigerant problem.
If the system is frozen, lowering the thermostat further will not correct the problem.
When You Should Call for Service
I recommend having the system inspected when:
The indoor temperature continues rising
The air conditioner cannot reach the thermostat setting
Airflow is weak
The home feels excessively humid
Ice forms on the piping or coil
Water is leaking around the indoor unit
The system starts and stops every few minutes
The breaker trips
You hear grinding, buzzing, or unusual vibration
You smell burning or electrical odors
Your electric bill increases without an obvious explanation
The purpose of a proper diagnostic visit is not to guess or immediately sell equipment. It is to determine why the system is not performing correctly.
My Advice to Central Florida Property Owners
From my experience, many expensive HVAC problems begin as smaller airflow, maintenance, drainage, duct, or electrical issues.
A dirty filter, restricted return, dirty coil, or loose electrical connection may not immediately stop the system from operating. However, allowing the system to continue struggling can place additional stress on more expensive components.
The best way to save money is not always to choose the cheapest immediate repair. It is to understand what caused the problem and correct it before additional damage occurs.
If your air conditioner is running constantly but maintaining the desired temperature, it may simply be responding to Florida’s heat and humidity.
If it is running constantly and your home or business is still uncomfortable, the system should be evaluated.
